Just quick note to say hey and Happy Friday! Playing along with Unity's Friends With Flair today. It's been a while and I kind of go into withdrawal when I miss a few weeks. ETA - the reason I have this fabulous alphabet set is because I love and was inspired by this card from Emily.

Happy to say I'm not suffering any jet lag but was happy to only have a three day work week. My evenings have been busy since I got home so no rest for the wicked!

This is my last week of playing along with the fabulous challenges over at Ribbon Carousel! It's been so much fun and an honour to be in amongst a wonderfully talented group of women. Kim O’Connell is one of the newestmembers of the RCC Design Team, but you’d think she’d been here from the start! With a wit and humor that keeps us institches, Kim is a fabulous artist with tons of techniques up her sleeve. So this week, Kim is challenging us touse the paper-piecing technique somewhere on our creations. Now, if you are using fabric, that’llwork too…just be sure to “ cut and piece” some part of your creation. Paper piecing is one of my favourite techniques... well, let me clarify. I love how it looks. I don't love the fussy cutting. Hence the reason I used a simple image for the challenge... my newly acquired cute little house.

Ribbon Carousel Challenge 37 - non-traditional

At the Ribbon Carousel Challenge this week, we’re changing things up in a Non-traditional kinda way! Suzanne is challenging us to use NON-Traditional colors for our creations. Making a valentine card? How about NOT using red or pink, or not too much of it anyways? Creating a gorgeous winter scene? Try it with creams instead of whites. Whatever you’re making….try a non-traditional palate as a challenge! Here's my non-traditional love card - not an easy task for me I tell you! So focused on love=red because I LOVE red. Check out this fabulous wired net ribbon I used for my background. Was feeling unusually brilliant when I figured that out! ;)

Have never tried this misting/masking technique before... have had this tutorial from October Afternoon bookmarked for quite a while so thought I should give it a shot (or spray? LOL). I think it turned out really well. It's really easy and it takes some of the scariness out of mists.

Love - clean and simple

Happy Friday! So glad you could stop by. Hope you've had a fabulous week! I had to deal with snow - ick! The reasons I don't like snow: it's cold, I have to shovel my long, wide drive way, it makes driving and walking difficult and potentially dangerous, I don't have little kids to play with, I don't have a mountain really close to go snowboarding, it bends the branches on the beautiful trees in my yard, I grew up where there was A LOT of snow & cold in the winter... I could go on. The reasons I should stay positive about snow (cause I realize I've been a ~~bit~~ lot cranky about it) : I have a warm home, I can walk to work (tough on the ankles but better than driving), I am able to drive in the snow, I have a 4x4, it's not -40 C or colder like it is where I grew up, I have warm mitts & a warm red coat, and I know it will melt, eventually. The sooner, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

So enough babbling... here's today's card. Playing along with these fun challenges:

A quick little polka dot card to play along with the current Paper Smooches Sparks Challenge (see below). I didn't have any hot pink polka dot paper so had to go with red (surprise, surprise). I also keyed in on the orange stripes and the green polka dots on the frog too. Polka dots aren't my favourite pattern but I do like to dabble from time to time. There's glitter on the top but it might be hard to see.

So excited to be back again with the fabulous DT at Ribbon Carousel! This week's challenge is a sketch! My favourite kind of challenge!

I altered the side panels just a smidge and used martini olives as the inspiration for my colours. The strip across centre HAD to be ribbon so grabbed this gorgeous satin edge ribbon from Ribbon Carousel.

I signed up for Clean and Simple Card Making because I love clean and simple and I love that Julie Ebersole is doing part of the class! It's been going on now for three days but I've had a busy week and am only now having a chance to share one of my cards for the class. Hope I don't get in trouble for being behind on my homework! Hee, hee... no worries, I'm always in trouble anyway. This is for one of the fun sketches Kristina shared. You know it's CAS because there are no embellishments and no 'out of the ordinary' tools.

Had to adjust and readjust this one (my friend was rolling her eyes at all the adjustments)... the size, the stripes (still think the top one is a bit wide). Oh well, I think it's fun, in a CAS kinda' way. Am also throwing this in the ring for the Paper Smooches February Guest Designer Challenge.

This is what I came up with! Even though I don't use blue a lot, I love it with chocolate brown. You'll have to ignore my pathetic excuse for a bow. I'm pretty sad with ribbon bows, and twine bows are even harder but I decided it needed a bow. Now I have to live with the consequences. Hee, hee...

Decided to play along with this month's love themed contest over at Hero Arts. For the sketch, I used another one of Lucy's fabulous sketches (thank you Lucy!!!). Really like how this turned out. I'm not usually into using hearts on my cards but my friend Cheiron has inspired me with cards like this and this.

Found out some sad news this week. My very local stamp store, where I have taught classes, is closing. Lasting Impressions will be closing at the end of this month. I'm really sad about it... I will miss the great staff and customers there. It's just a reminder to everyone to shop locally and support your local businesses, crafty or otherwise.

Happy Friday! I know the parties aren't until tomorrow but thought I would start early (those who know me well will not be surprised)! Playing along with Unity's Friends with Flair and CAS-ual Friday's CFC 33 - kraft and twine. A clean and simple little card using some 'new to me' stamps!

I made a few of these to send as New Year's cards to a few people who sent unexpected Christmas cards (a similar situation to Emily Leiphart - you should check out this brilliant card she made - will be putting that in my thoughts for next year). I sent 60 handmade Christmas cards this year... so what's a few more? I also made another celebratory New Year's card... you'll see that soon!

Takin' it easy

This is my last day off before heading back to work so I'm taking it easy. Thought I would head down to my craft table and make an easy little card. This is for one of the Hero Arts sketches for December, SCS Clean & Simple 150 - window card and SCS Colour Challenge 355 - Bashful Blue, Night of Navy and white.

Working for a couple days then another four days off. No complaints! No complaints about our quiet Christmas either. We went to Tofino, BC (about a 4 hour drive from here, on the west coast of Vancouver Island) for a quiet (well, except for the crashing waves!), relaxing, romantic, amazing holiday. Here are some of the photos. It was great because we got stormy (which I love) and sunny (which I also love)... all on Christmas day.

Thanks to you, my blog readers, so being so fabulous! I appreciate all of the support and kind comments you've given me this year!

I'm playing along with the Paper Smooches Sparks Challenge. Inspired by the colours and pattern of the ribbon in the cute photo below (even my hubby thinks this is pretty fun and creative!). This card makes me wish I had cream coloured ink or embossing powder! Hmmm, time to track some down... Can you see the green and red sparkles in the gold embossing powder? The name of it is Christmas... picked it up years ago at Lasting Impressions Stamps... thought it was time to dust it off and use it. I so rarely emboss any more.

Globally inspired

Those who know me well know that I love to travel and I love maps. This card is a combination of those loves which was inspired by the Get Inspired by Home Decor Challenge in the Moxie Fab World (see photo below). Shockingly enough, I do not have a globe or Earth stamp (shocking to me anyway) and this card has made me realize I must acquire one (any suggestions?).

I actually submitted a card for this when the call came out but it didn't make it. You can see it here.

My one wish right now is that I get a fraction of my 'to do' list done over the next week. This whole working business definitely gets in the way of life - hee, hee. No complaints... really enjoying my new job.

This is a quick mini card for the CAS-ual Friday Challenge #31 - In the Mist (there is mist on the white panel too), the Create challenge - have a Christmas tree as the central focus, and the Paper Crafts' December Gallery Challenge. You may have heard my rant about mist already... I'm trying to get over my fears. One way to do that is to just mist everything, which I've done here. I really like the light mist on the dark paper... that's on my "must do again" list. The one thing I would change on this is to have a darker brown on the brackets (but couldn't find the right ink - note to self: clean up craft room so you can find it).

Happy Monday all! Hope you had a fabulous (long for my US friends) weekend. Ok, so, sometimes I cause myself undue stress. This is one of those times. Why? Not sure. Giving myself a challenge I guess (silly me), going outside my comfort zone (I hear it's supposed to good for me, ppffftt!). When I first saw the Championing Award Medallions Challenge in the Moxie Fab World, I avoided it because I find them difficult (mega fine scale scoring & folding, they tear and take a ton of adhesive to stay together). I changed my mind when my fab friend Cheiron made them look so easy (not once but twice). Then, I decided to play along with my fab friend Julie's colour challenge over at Ellen Hutson's CLASSroom (Happy Anniversary Ellen! Congrats Julie on your new gig!). Julie sucked me in with her beautiful sample but the combination includes pink AND turquoise (two of my colour nemeses... insert colourful curse words here). Then, I decided to layer the medallions, WHAT?... sigh, I have officially gone crazy. So here's what I came up with... (my apologies for all of the babbling and whining... yes, I'll take some cheese with that)...

So I'm ok with this card. Overlooking the little flaws....

TGIF! A quick post for a not so quick card. This little clean and simple card took forever... seems to be the name of the game these days. Still not 100% happy with it but will post it anyway! Guess my crafty mojo is still down in New Mexico shopping, admiring the artwork, snacking on chips & guacamole, eating green chile cheese burgers and drinking microbrews! Travel, treats (a.k.a. giveaway) and thanks

First off, Happy Thanksgiving to my many American friends! We celebrate Thanksgiving in October in Canada and I was lucky enough to spend it with several of my family members. Wherever you are, I hope you are spending it with the people you love. {Note: this is going to be a long post, be sure to read all the way to the bottom, it will be worth it... there *might* be a giveaway at the end!}.

I recently spent almost two weeks in New Mexico with my hubby (who was on a work trip). Thought I would share some of highlights through some photos I took (warning: photo overload ahead). For the full group of photos, check out this flickr set.

We started in Albuquerque which has a fabulous little Old Town. Love the colours and design.

It is on historic Route 66 and there are some fabulous signs, both neon and traditional.

All along the way, we ate amazing spicy food (green and red chiles - YUM!), drank locally made wine and sampled several of the local microbreweries. Hitting local microbreweries is something we try to do everywhere we travel. Sometimes it's not a successful venture... this time it was...

We had a weekend to drive around a bit so we stopped at the Carlsbad Caverns (AMAZING!)...

...a quick stop in Roswell, because we are science geeks...

...the Valley of Fires (amazing lava flow - 3 km wide and 32 km long)...

...the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge...

...the Very Large Array, centre of radio astronomy (because we are very large geeks)...

...the Rio Grande Gorge... we stood on the bridge near Taos, 200 metres above the river... wow...

Settled down again in Santa Fe, centre of art, food (including home-made guacamole - YUM!!!) and colour...

I'm working on doing a page for my blog that has travel recommendations (food, drinks, hotels, crafty shops, tourist stops). I'll let you know when it's up.

I'm really behind on my Christmas cards (i.e. I haven't started) so I'm happy I signed up for Holiday Boot Camp. Turns out I was away for most of the last two weeks while camp was on (similar to the summer camp) as I tagged along on my hubby's work trip to New Mexico. So I am still behind... my best friend was shocked at our last crafty night (a couple of weeks ago) that I hadn't started yet, as she had started in July. I'm chalking it up to being away all summer and feeling like it's only September! I have a simple idea in my head for my card (only one style this year), hopefully I will start by the end of the month.

So I'm squeezing in a last minute holiday card for one of the boot camp sketches... it also works for the current Unity Stamp Company Challenge - Let it Snow.

Hey there...just a quick, colourful, CAS card to play along with the Paper Smooches Sparks challenge. I was inspired by the colours and the clean, crisp nature of the image. I'm usually not into cutesy, as you may know, but Paper Smooches definitely makes my kind of cute stamps. I used my blender pen to give these little sea creatures some pattern but not sure how well you can see it.

I'm not always purposeful in my cards (other than doing it for a specific challenge like today's Friends with Flair over at Unity Stamp Co.) but I was in this one. It is Remembrance Day in Canada. It's the day we remember veterans, soldiers and peace keepers who serve, have served and sacrificed for our freedom. I am rarely speechless but I find it hard to put my feelings into word in this case... however, my friend Gillian wrote this eloquent post. Back to the card, the sentiment on this card is quite relevant today and the red flowers with black centres symbolize the poppies we wear to commemorate this day.

DeNami Product Spotlight: Large Mitten

It's DeNami Design Guest Designer assignment #2! I'm having so much fun. Myself and the Design Team are featuring this fun mitten stamp.

I grew up in a climate where it got quite cold in the winter so I always had mitts. None of this glove stuff we have on the West Coast. I had mitts knit by my mom (or my grandma?) and they had a string attaching them together so I wouldn't loose them. They were great but a pain to thread through the sleeves of my winter jacket. This memory was the inspiration for this card. My hubby would say I still need some strings as this summer I lost 2 pairs of sunglasses, a toque and a pair of gloves (I managed to retrieve the gloves)... possibly a few other things. I usually don't loose things so was rather annoyed with myself.

I'm a reject... again... and I'm ok with it

Playing along with Amber's Reject Blog hop for the May/June Paper Crafts call. I submitted 5 cards, no acceptances. No worries though, there is always next time! This was for one of the sketches (see below). I'm celebrating rejection! A big congrats to those (like Jocelyn, Cheiron, and Michelle) who did get acceptances!

I've been thinking a lot lately about publications, design teams, challenges, etc. In this world of facebook and blog land, it's hard not to get caught up in the "how many did you get accepted for publication?", "what design teams are you on?", "have you ever won on this challenge blog?", "how many people follow your blog?", "are you going to CHA this year?", "how many comments do you get on your blog?", "did you get asked to be in this blog hop?" ... I find myself getting overwhelmed with it all, comparing myself to others and putting pressure on myself to get published, get recognized... be the 'popular kid' (which I never was in school). It's been happening recently and I realize I have to stop, take a deep breath, step back and remind myself why I do this and why I have always done this. To have fun. I'm lucky enough to have a group of amazing crafty friends here and when we get together, we laugh, talk and have a blast (often there is more talking than crafting). It doesn't matter to them how many times I've been published, they just think it's cool. I also have amazing 'far away' crafty friends (you know who you are - thank you!), who are fabulous, fun and supportive (we commiserate about this kind of stuff). I have an over-abundance of craft supplies and my own space to craft in. I have a handful of publications and I'm proud of them all. I have 97 followers on my blog and lots of fabulous people who stop by my blog regularly to leave sweet comments, thanks to all of you! So I will likely never be a Paper Crafts Go To Gal, have 600 followers on my blog, be on the Dirty Dozen at Splitcoast Stampers, a Garden Girl at 2 Peas, be on 6 design teams at the same time, have dozens of comments on every blog post or have five projects accepted for every Paper Crafts magazine and special edition for the next two years. You know what? I'm ok with that. I love this hobby and will likely stay with it for as long as I am able. I'm thankful for everything I have, the recognition I do receive and will not worry about what I don't have. Publication submissions will continue and I will celebrate the acceptances and rejections.

Not so simple spark

It took me forever to get this clean and simple (CAS) card for the Paper Smooches Sparks Challenge, hence the reason I'm posting it at the last minute. I've lost count of how many iterations of this has been but I'm finally happy with it (can you see the swirls in the clouds?). Frustrates me when a CAS card takes FOREVER... Anyway, I was inspired by the colours and texture in the Sparks image. In addition, I am playing along again with the CAS-ual Friday Sketch Challenge 26.

As I was making this last night, one of my crafty gals pointed out something about the clouds. They could also be popcorn! Brilliant... might have to try that!

Woodgrain whining & a winner

Woodgrain stresses me out. Repeated same size elements stress me out. Lining up patterns stresses me out. So when I got this idea in my head to do this card, I must have wanted to cause myself stress. I don't know what I was thinking. The idea was to have equally sized squares and have the wood grain pattern line up. That "sorta, kinda, maybe, but not really" happened...sigh. But I'm not doing it again (already wasted a lot of paper) so this will have to do. All of this to play along with the Moxie Fab World Tuesday Trigger: Autumn Woods. Hee, hee. Thanks to Cath (I guess) for a ginormous challenge! The sketch is from Card Ideas for Paper Crafters.

Thrilled to be doing Growing in Unity this week! I've been having a blast playing with my Unity stamps, whipping up some creations to share. Today's premiere card is playing along with the All Things Unity Challenge 42 - BINGO (see the game card below) and SCS Hope You Can Cling To Challenge #13 - Butterflies of Hope. I did the left hand vertical row - mist, twine, buttons and die cuts. Ok, so I have to admit, I've had mist lurking around my craft room for almost a year (I won it). It periodically whispers to me "just do it - try me". I have to say I've been scared of it's unpredictability and, now I know, for good reason. It's a good thing I have a bulk package of white card stock because I went through a lot of it trying to get this card just right. Don't get me wrong, I'm not scared of it because I'm a perfectionist (pretty random and spontaneous actually), it's because I am uncoordinated. Uncoordinated is not good with mist. I definitely have to do some more trials before I will be using it on a regular basis. Ok, enough babbling... here's my card...

Playing with my Paper Smooches stamps today for the November Guest Designer search (last minute entry - closes later today). I realize, looking at this now, I don't really know what kind of cupcake is green - hee, hee. Mint maybe. ETA - Emily suggested key lime pie - definitely a better choice than mint. Yum! Oh well, creative license and all that. I think our creations would be much less interesting if we stuck to true life colour! To get the candle 'sunk' in, I first stamped the candle right on top of the cupcake but masked over the bottom. The bottom of the candle is paper pieced and then slid into a slit on the cupcake. Doing it this way kept me from having to cut out around the candle wick.

This also works for a couple of Splitcoast Stampers challenges - Clean and Simple #140 (Cupcake) and Hope You Can Cling To #8 (hanging element). As some of you know, I ran a challenge on my blog every Monday. I stopped doing it in the spring as I was going to be away for the summer. I've decided, in the interest of time and priorities, that I will be discontinuing my Random Amusing Challenge. A quick post for the Paper Smooches November Guest Designer Search. I have to say my mojo is really struggling these days so I've kept this card pretty clean and simple. I'm going to try and get another Paper Smooches card done before the deadline on Wednesday but the way my creativity is ebbing and flowing lately... not holding my breath...

There is glitter on the ice cream but it's hard to see... will take another photo later when my camera battery is recharged. The paper inspired me to make a plaid ice cream cone... like how it turned out.

A last minute post to play along with All Things Unity #41 - Take inspiration from a magazine image. Thanks to the DT for their fabulously inspired projects!

I was poking around my recent National Geographic issues and found this beautiful image from the waters off the coast of my own province, British Columbia. It is part of an article called Pipeline Through Paradise. There are some amazing photos in this article... looking forward to reading it as it is hits VERY close to home, literally.

I was inspired by the colours and textures and came up with this:

Does Unity have a seastar stamp? If not, they should... hint, hint... ;)

Did something I hardly ever do anymore... heat emboss. I couldn't get a good image with the {several different types of} white ink I have - either too juicy (blurred the image) or too dull. Anyone else have white ink frustration? Any recommendations? Also, thinking it may need a button or pearl in the top left corner but couldn't make a decision so left it off. Step away from the card Glenda....

Happy Friday... hope you've had a great week. I've been having a great week, catching up on life and playing at my craft table... avoiding the inevitable return to the job hunt. Just a few more days of avoidance... I'll start on Monday... maybe.

Today I'm playing with Unity Stamps for their October Kit of the Month sketch and Friends with Flair. Friends with Flair is fabulous because it happens every Friday and the only thing you have to do is use Unity Stamps and post your project on Friday. I must admit any sketch where are multiple panels/circles that need to be the same size and lined up stress me out. Never seems like things are quite the same size or quite lined up... that would be the reason I used different circle sizes on my card yesterday. These Echo Park Walk in the Park papers make this card so cheerful, I love it! One funny thing on this card was the die that I used for the sentiment... I looked over at my Spellbinder dies the other day and realized I had never used this one. It was unopened and I must confess.... I don't remember when I bought them! I could blame it on being away but I think it's a case of... you know you have too many craft supplies when...

The sentiment is an important one as I hear of people fighting cancer (like Katie Renz) and some losing their battle (my hubby's childhood friend). Love your life today... be thankful...

I am rarely speechless in real life or on a card but *gasp*... I've made a card with no sentiment on the front! It's not a big deal really... I just realized how rarely I do it. It makes me realize I should do it more often... and then stamp the sentiment on the inside...

This is for one of the Hero Arts Sketches this month... the colours were inspired by the SCS CAS inspiration photo challenge (CAS139) this week. There are flowers stamped in VersaMark on the solid circles... hard to see, but they are there.

Back at the table

I'm back at my craft table! So excited! I'm busy after being gone for so long... working on a few deadlines, pulling together some publication submissions and also trying to do some challenges.

I'm thrilled to be doing 'Growing in Unity' in a couple of weeks so thought I should pull out my Unity Stamps. This is for the current Unity Challenge - Falling Leaves. One thing that is difficult to see on here is the two scored lines under the sentiment...

If you haven't heard, there is a blog hop/fundraiser going on right now to help Katie Renz. She is a fellow stamper who is dealing with Stage 4 inoperable cancer. All the proceeds from the fundraiser go directly to help Katie, her husband and their young family. Just found out today that Katie has been readmitted to hospital so am sending her and her family strength and positive vibes... cancer really sucks. Check out i {heart} papers for all the details.

It's rare for me to do a non-crafty, personal post but I just wanted to share a few thoughts...

I have a love/hate relationship with technology. I love keeping in touch with my far away family and friends, all the knowledge and fun at our finger tips, and how, in some ways, technology makes life 'easier'. On the contrary, I dislike how much time it sucks away, how we feel we always need to be 'connected' and how frustrating it can be when things fail. However, I do believe that Steve Jobs changed our world. As I type on my MacBook Pro, my iPod is not far away and my Apple TV provides my home with sights and sounds. My hubby, not a huge Mac lover, has grown very fond of his iPad, using it for work and pleasure. MacIntosh is part of our lives, no doubt about it....

Hope you are on another exciting journey Steve Jobs... thanks for thinking differently, and getting some of us to do the same... you will be missed. Wish you'd been able to stick around a little longer...

Happy Wednesday friends! Hope you are having a great week so far. I'm am super excited today as I got to see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) last night! I have seen them before but never this far North (I'm at around 61 degrees latitude) and they were just phenomenal. I don't have my good camera so didn't get any photos but they were just so amazing.... breath taking.... awesome... amazing... phenomenal....dancing across the sky...

And yes, I'm a big science geek. Why? Because I know if you subscribe to Space Weather, you will get notifications about solar flares/auroras. :)

Sharing a double reject today... submitted twice for publication and shut down twice! No worries though! I'm lucky enough to have a little list of publications now and will continue to submit. Couldn't resist sharing this cute little card which highlights my favourite cocktail (minus the olive!). Just a note...there is glitter in the glass (it's difficult to see in the photo).

It's been interesting for me, looking back at all my publication rejections from the last year (which is pool I'm using for my 'away for work' cards). Some of them I look at and say "yes, I understand why that didn't get in". For others I say "no, not sure why they didn't LOVE this as much as I did". Then, for cards such as this, I say "If I had changed (insert idea here), maybe it would have gotten in." If I had done a dry emboss of small polka dots on the white card stock here, it might have made it in. Who knows?

Anyway, I still really like this fun card and am happy it was rejected so I can share it with you while I'm not at home to create. Today is the day Paper Crafts Magazine sends out their acceptance emails for March/April 2012. Crossing my fingers I get an email but if I don't, then I'll have more goodies to share with you. I only had a chance to submit 4 cards this time... time to wait and see...

Crafty Collaboration

A couple of weeks ago, during my work break (which coincided with my hubby's trip to Southern California), I was fortunate enough to visit with my great friend, fellow science geek and crafty gal, Jill Grace (and finally meet her sweet hubby Ray!). We were able to squeeze in some crafty time and decided to whip up a card for another good friend, Dawn Stein. Dawn has been very sweet and supportive to both Jill and I over the last year or so. For Jill, it was during the time of doing her Masters' thesis. For me, it was during my time of being out of work. So, this is what we came up with....

Dawn is loves pelicans so we couldn't resist using my Surf & Turf set from Paper Smooches. I have to confess that Jill did 95% percent of this card all on her own (including the absolutely BRILLIANT pier). The only thing I am responsible for on this card is the little yellow fish and the bubbles.

Jill also added this special return address....

A big thanks to Dawn for being so fabulous and supportive and to Jill for being so brilliantly creative and making cocktails while we crafted! Jill and Ray were great hosts during our visit to Southern California. Of course, big hugs to both of them for being such great friends, even though they both live far away.

Hope you are having a funky day! I'm playing along with the Unity Kit of the Month Sketch Challenge today and decided to paper piece a funky owl. Turned out pretty cool & funky I think! I also ventured back into the pleated ribbon realm... I guess it's ok (see my previous lament here). Definitely worked better with wider tape but was still frustrated. It won't be a common practice around here so don't get used to it - hee, hee!

I'm headed back to work so this will be my last fresh post for a while. Will do my best to serve up some more of my publication rejections over the next few weeks.

Never Give Up

Happy Tuesday crafty friends. Hope you are having a great day so far. The bliss of my sunny time off is coming to an end today as I head back to work. I have a new post for you today and tomorrow (I did a lot of crafting on my time off - can you tell?) and then I'll have some oldies but goodies for you throughout September.

This clean and simple card is for CAS-ual Fridays 18 (CFC18) - make a red, white and black card inspired by a book (in honour of international literacy day on September 8th) and All Things Unity 39 (ATU39) - embellishment, Unity/Ippity stamp, rub-on/sticker (mine is the ric rac) (ETA - apparently I can't read/write properly as my original post said ribbon instead of stamp). I love books and I love red, white and black so the CFC challenge was a must. I love combining challenges and I haven't played along with ATU forever so thought it was a good combination. The book I was inspired by was Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. It is an amazing book (highly recommend it) about a quest for the origins of a rare book. The main character is very persistent so thought this sentiment was appropriate and the writing in the background was appropriate for a book about a book. ETA - I forgot that I could also play along with the Play Date Cafe Color Challenge 97 with this too!

Happy holiday Monday to my North American friends. Hope you aren't labouring too much!

Whipped up a CAS 5MQ (clean & simple 5 minute quickie) to play along with the Embellish Stripes Colour Trends Challenge (see inspiration photo below). I have a hard time putting red and blue together so this definitely was a challenge. To make it easier on myself I put a lot of white space on my card... it's great trick for colour challenges when the combination is difficult.

Getting sketchy on Sunday

Happy Sunday... hope you are enjoying a sunny day like I am. Playing along with My Favorite Things Sketch Challenge 35. Thanks to the MFT DT for the great samples! I used the map paper and the Going Places Stamp Set as the starting point for the card. These colours are a bit subdued for me so added a hit of red (surprise, surprise) on her shoes and with the button.

Had a hard time getting a good photo of this card. Does that ever happen to you?

Ok, someone has to tell me how it got to be September. I feel like I've only had a few weeks of summer. Oh wait... that's because I've been working almost every day since the middle of June! Hee, hee. No complaints though... I've had an amazing two weeks off of glorious sunshine and great times with my hubby and friends. Heading back soon...

To ~~lament~~ celebrate the arrival of September, I am playing along with Hero Arts September Colour Challenge. Love these colours except for the dark green. I think I've mentioned before how I have trouble with shades of colours - do you? I love red but not pink, light green but not dark green, dark purple but not light purple, bright orange but not peach... weird. There is pale yellow in the centre of the flowers - it's hard to see, but it's there. The two yellows and burgundy for the colour challenge were perfect for the rock n' roll technique.

Fast Friday

Short and fast post. Quick and simple card. Playing along with Play Date Color Cafe Challenge 97 (colour splash with RED - HAD to play along, my red soul made me) and Celebrate the Occasion 28 (sketch - adjusted a bit because I just couldn't pleat the ribbon - completely incompetent). Thanks to all the Design Team members for the fabulous inspiration!

ETA - thanks to Yvette for the double sided tape suggestion. I tried that for about 30 seconds with some grosgrain ribbon, couldn't get it to work, threw it aside in disgust and grabbed the velvet ribbon instead. Felt quite incompetent. I will try it again with wider tape... I couldn't find it in the disaster that is my craft room right now!

Loving neutrals

I'm usually a bold and bright gal but embracing my neutral side today by playing along with this week's Moxie Fab World Tuesday Trigger - Nice and Neutral (see the inspiration photo below). I needed an anniversary card so decided to use the banner for inspiration. I was also inspired by the wooden headboard and the colours. The other deviation from my norm? No stamping on this card *gasp*!

A quick post to play along with the Square Sketch Challenge in the Moxie Fab World. The sketch is shown below the card. Thanks to Go-To Gal Kim Kesti for the sketch and to Cath for the challenge. Decided to stay in my comfort zone here and stick with a clean and simple (CAS) card. I used my Slice Elite and cut out some flowers and then layered the negatives. Love this colour combo...

I stumbled across this 'on real beauty' video posted by my friend Gillian on her facebook page. It is so true... I needed this reminder. Maybe you do too....

Horizontal note

I'm squeezing in as many cards as I can while I'm home... so here is another one. This is for the Horizontal Sketch Challenge in the Moxie Fab World. I actually submitted for this sketch but alas, it was rejected. I think this is much more brilliant than my original design...:). The kite paper is uber fun so decided to use it for inspiration. The kite cross members are cut up skewers sticks (credit to my boy, Karl, for helping me get clean cuts on those sticks).

Surf & turf spark

This is for the Paper Smooches Sparks Challenge. It is an inspiration challenge using the photo below. I've used the colours and the texture of the painted wood. You know pink is hard for me but managed to put a splash in (it was probably easier because I was in the pink-friendly home of my friend Jill Grace at the time). Kim had suggested we could put some red in - but I just couldn't put the red and pink together this time (red & pink is harder than just pink). Just got this cute Surf and Turf set so had to use it (I'm not usually into cute but cute sea creatures.... I just couldn't resist). It's hard to see but I put Diamond Glaze on the fish eye balls.
